FORCES OF NATURE

_Forces of Nature_ Joyce Billet Photo by Robin Hill.jpeg

Forces of Nature is a series of permanent outdoor sculptural installations at The Village of Casa Familia, located at 10951 SW 84th St. in Miami. The project, commissioned through Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places, creates an inclusive, tactile experience, inviting visitors to interact with nature, encounter reflective surfaces, and explore the relationship between humans, their environment, and functional art.

A series of interactive panels composed of painted metal and mirror fragments is distributed throughout the site, merging the viewer with the surrounding landscape while layered fragments create partial and shifting views of others. Some panels are primarily reflective, interrupted by blue fragments, while others reverse that composition, using blue surfaces broken by moments of reflection. Together, the “positive” and “negative” variations create a dynamic interplay across the installation and serve as a visual metaphor for how we see ourselves in relation to one another and the world around us.

At the heart of Forces of Nature is a canopy social area inspired by Billet’s abstract paintings. The shaded structure creates a place for conversation, rest, or retreat, with benches cast in light blue fiberglass from etched wood surfaces based on Billet’s drawings. Supported by concrete legs formed from 3D-printed molds and integrated with living plants, the benches offer both functional seating and a tactile encounter with the work.
